RRP Certification in NOLA July 10

You should already know that as of April 22 2010 EPA is requiring all work done for compensation on homes and child occupied facilities built before 1978 be bone by certified firms using Certified Renovators and that all of the workers on the job either be Certified Renovators or trained workers.

 

The class will be held at:

341 North Hennessey Street

New Orleans, LA 70119

The EPA has recently delayed enforcement of the rule however this does not mean you should wait to become certified. You can learn more about the EPA decision to delay enforcement here.

Are you ready for RRP?

Come April 22, 2010 you, anyone doing work for compensation on homes built before 1978, will be required to be a certified firm and assign a certified renovator to each job.

 To become a certified firm log onto the EPA website for RRP and go to Information for Contractors.

Click on Application for firm certification (PDF) and download the form, print it out, fill in the blanks and send in a check for $300.00. This will get your firm in compliance as a certified firm.

To become a certified renovator you must attend an 8 hour EPA approved course given by an EPA trained instructor.

To locate RRP classes in your area go to the EPA website listing Find a training provider.

You must provide this to the owner/occupant of pre-1978 homes you work on.

Who is really doing the GOOD?

ABOVE: This home has been worked on by a contractor and by a miracle rebuilding group and still needs thousands of dollars of work before it is ready for weatherization. 

 I saw it again today, a home where at least one contractor and one of the "miracle rebuilding efforts" had worked...

and it was not even close to being done.

It seems the contractor absconded with the money. Absconded might be too civilized, let's call it robbery.

And the miracle was from NOLA 100. A quote form their website:

"NOLA100 was an intense, 100 day rebuilding effort that renovated New Orleans housing units from June to October, 2008. NOLA100 was designed to test a large scale, rapid implementation, energy efficient rebuilding template, especially suited for use in post-disaster situations.

The goal of the program was to achieve economies of scale by combining experienced construction supervision, motivated volunteers and coordinated logistics to quickly and cost effectively rehabilitate damaged housing stock. The project was designed and executed by the Hope Has A Face Foundation with support provided by the Clinton Climate Initiative and The Salvation Army"

Check out this photo we took of the back door. No threshold, no door bottom, no weatherstripping.t today. If you check out the statistics on the NOLA 100 website it is apparent this house was at the lower end of the priority list. 

ABOVE: This back door without a threshold is typical of much of the rebuilding work being done in NOLA. Stop the insanity!
